Upplands-Bro municipality had inadequate accessibility and difficulties in developing operations due to an IT environment that needed to be updated and secured. Many projects were on hold and the security levels were insufficient, which led the municipality to initiate an extensive collaboration with Nordlo to modernise and streamline its IT systems.

Since the collaboration between Nordlo and Upplands-Bro Municipality commenced in 2013, several major projects have been driven and IT maturity has developed significantly. In 2021, the municipality was nominated for Sweden's digitalisation municipality, and over the years, the IT environment has become both more efficient and accessible, while the municipality now wants to focus more on security and continued strong digitalisation.
Before the collaboration with Nordlo, Upplands-Bro Municipality faced inadequate accessibility and had difficulty finding time and opportunity to focus on developing operations. To maintain a high level of security, there was a need to update the IT environment of the operations, where the infrastructure needed upgrading and new IT solutions needed to be implemented, while many projects were on hold and the security levels were part of the challenge.
The digital environment is described as a house that has seen no maintenance for many years, with moisture damage in the basement, broken walls, and rain coming in from the roof, which meant that no new functions could be added to the environment.
Nordlo has had overall responsibility for the IT delivery to Upplands-Bro municipality since 2013, which has involved help with service desk and support, infrastructure, workplaces, mobile devices, printing, networks, server capacity and storage. Upplands-Bro now has higher availability and a completely different level of service than before, where the collaboration became a liberating factor for the municipality, which could suddenly rely on the deliveries as the level of availability increased.
Together, Nordlo and Upplands-Bro were able to follow up on projects that had been dormant for a long time to continue the development of the operations, where Nordlo upgraded the municipality's network infrastructure and workplace platform, as well as ensured the security levels in all environments.
A dedicated customer team has worked closely with the customer in their daily operations since the beginning, and through many project-intensive years where the engagement has led to a deep understanding of the customer's business, the foundation has been laid for continued collaboration.
Our digital environment was like a house that had not seen any maintenance for many years. There were damp issues in the cellar, broken walls, and rain was coming in from the roof. No new features could have been added to the environment.
For Upplands-Bro, the collaboration has meant a significant change for the municipality's efficiency, where digitalisation has increased accessibility for the municipality's residents. Nordlo has enabled many IT projects, and the municipality has had access to a full team of specialists with expertise in various areas of IT operations, architecture, and security, while the IT partnership has, over nearly a decade, created a good relationship and understanding of the operations that has resulted in fundamental security and conditions for new innovations.
The municipality can now focus on those they are here for – the residents – instead of previously spending all their time patching, fixing, and resolving incidents.
Upplands-Bro continues its collaboration with Nordlo, which has now expanded its responsibility for IT security and applications, signifying the launch of various security activities and the implementation of IoT platforms. Together, they are planning the Smart Municipality project, aimed at creating a simpler municipality to live in.
By putting IoT platforms and devices into operation, it becomes possible to, among other things, obtain information about the number of parking spaces and visitors at cafés in the municipality, while more security-enhancing activities such as multi-factor authentication have been implemented. The municipality is also looking into introducing RPA technology and robotics in the collaboration to streamline operational processes.
In the future, solutions for HR activities, digital tools within health and social care, and other activities that can streamline the municipality's operational flows will be implemented, where Upplands-Bro municipality has previously implemented IoT solutions with digital tools to read the number of parking spaces at bathing sites.
